Value Your Home Computer Data

by Jon Beck, CFP on December 4, 2009

At work, you probably have an IT person who makes sure your servers and desktops are backed-up.  But what about your home computers?  I hand't thought about it until my 16 year old came to me one day and said, "my laptop is acting funny".

Turns out her hard drive was going bad.  The drive wasn't dead so I was able to backup the drive and install a new one without major issues.  However, during that process I di d some checking on the data that she had on her computer, which in turn made me think about the data on the rest of our computers.

The Thing About Netbooks

by Jon Beck, CFP on August 28, 2009

Netbooks are small and simple laptop computers.  Where a typcialy small laptop will weigh in at 4 - 5 lbs. and set you back $900 - $1,500, netbooks weigh in at around 2 1/2 lbs. and cost around $400.  Why should you care?

Netbooks represent a truely portable device.  Their size means they can be thrown literally in any bag / briefcase.  Getting your e-mail is much easier on a 10" screen than the 2 inch screen on your Blackberry - it really is.  While Blackberrys and similar devices (we're partcial to these) will always have their place, we've found netbooks to be very useful business tools.

Technology Won't Change My Business . . .

by Jon Beck, CFP on March 28, 2009

So thought the New York Times until 2009 rolled around.  Then, someone did some interesting math.  According to the Silicon Valley Insider, the NY Times could buy EVERY ONE of their subscribers an Amazon Kindle for 1/2 the cost of publishing the traditional newspaper for 1 year.

And just think, once the Kindles are purchased, their purblishing costs go down by another 90% since they only have to buy Kindles for new subscribers.  That's an amazing change in a business paradigm.  If it ever comes to fruition.
